About Papa Oppong

Growing up, my favorite thing to play with were Barbie dolls. The many roles and lives this inanimate object lived was mesmerizing and made me dream beyond my immediate surroundings. Through play, I discovered fantasy and through fantasy I found my escape.

By spending time with the women in my family, I heard several folktales of pre-colonial Ghana that had been passed down from generations before me and often wondered how these stories could be preserved in a more tangible form beyond word-of-mouth. This inadvertently led me to be a storyteller myself and by combining my desire to escape reality with these many stories from the women in my life, my eponymous brand was born.

Papa Oppong is ultimately an open dialogue on the potential of African luxury in the global fashion space. This is a brand built on clothing as ever-evolving ideas that celebrate traditional craftsmanship without compromising on quality, innovation and style.

Most importantly this is a journey of craft preservation and an honoring of those behind the scenes; the artisans and their skills.

I was always an unusual boy.
